And this wasn't a game that suddenly changed from updates, like Path of Exile or something. There was a guy who gave an indie game (Siralim Ultimate) a negative review after 350 hours of playtime. If anything, the game has more depth now. In those games you have a smaller party size, the free-form levelling system has been replaced with a skill tree.īut I do not see how that claim has merit when comparing the Geneforge remake with the original. Now, you could argue that the latest Avernum remakes have reduced RPG elements compared to the original Exile series. In addition there is a new item upgrade system, new quests, more areas. I do not see how that is "dumbed down" at all. So to sum up: fewer spells but a much more complex and fun creation system. * A wholly new creation customisation system, where you can give special abilities to your creations as well as stat boosts. * One extra creation you can make compared to the original. Still, people don't really like this change, and the developer has promised to expand the number of spells for the next title. Perhaps this is what that player complains about? On the other hand, the spells we do get are more distinctive. (Stealth, which also introduces a rudimentary stealth mechanic.) A few skills have been changed, 1 new skill has been added. Same semi-class-based leveling system with free skillpoint allocatoin. * Very similar character development system. If I compare this remake to the original, I would not say that it removed RPG elements. It merely makes an assertion and calls it a day. It does not explain why that person thinks this game is "puddle deep" compared to older Spiderweb titles. I do not think the review you mention is particularly helpful. Which isn't to say that all such reviews are without merit. Every game that is a sequel has negative reviews that go "they dumbed it down because kids these days are too stupid to appreciate a real game."
